Norfolk is the beautiful county which is home to King’s Lynn, once named Bishops Lynn until Henry VIII renamed it for himself. Lynn is a word from medieval English, and it is used to describe a tidal pool, which is the Oust at Kings Lynn, so this is actually both a port and a market town.
Founded in 1095, where a settlement grew up around a Benedictine Abbey, this area was part of an estate owned by one Bishop De Losinga. Rights to hold markets were granted in 1101 and this charming Norfolk Town is still a market town today. Starting on Valentines Day a great fair is still held for two weeks.
In honor of the patron saint of sailors, Bishop Turbus erected the St. Nicholas’ church in the 12th century and the town steadily grew and had a population of around 5 500, which was considered to be large in those days. They exported grain, salt and wool to Europe, and imported pitch, wood, iron and fish from Scandanavia. Together with these goods, Britain’s most deadly import came in from Europe, the Black Death. But, while this is true, these areas all still have an address that is a Burlington street address. This fact has caused many to suffer having their mail incorrectly reflect them living in the wrong location. It has made delivery very difficult and confusing. It has also been the cause of loss of access to emergency services. The Highlands of Scotland have been well documented for their conflicts and betrayals in fact it is surely legitimate that from the reign of James IV in the 1490’s life in the Highlands had been fairly tumultuous. In 1493, James went against the powerful chiefs of the MacDonald Clan and forfeited the MacDonald Lord of the Isles in favour of himself along with the Campbell Clan. Therefore the Campbell’s took over as powerhouse in that time at the expense of the MacDonalds.
Issues arose not only with the MacDonalds but also with several additional Scottish clans because of this harmful power divide that the Campbells kept over all others. The Campbell were in such a position that they could buy up readily available land and charge a kind of lease upon anybody that wished to utilize the area for cows or sheep. Peterborough Cambridgeshire can be found about 75 miles from London in Eastern England on the River Nene. There is evidence of a Bronze Age settlement a few miles east of the city center. The city once housed Romans and then when the Anglo Saxons took over they built a large monastery which they called Medeshamsted standing today as Peterborough Cathedral.
There is a great deal of history to learn about and historical sites abound in the area. Parts of the cathedral including the West Front entrance were destroyed during the English Civil War. It was rebuilt from 1118 to 1238 in typical English Gothic style. The statues of St. Andrew, Saint Paul and Saint Peter grace the West Front from gables that reach high into the sky and from three large arches. Inside the cathedral is a surviving painted wooden ceiling that is rare and wonderful. Two Queens were buried in the floor of the cathedral and one still remains. The remaining queen is Katherine of Aragon. Mary, Queen of Scots was also buried at the cathedral but she was transferred to Westminster Abbey when King James I, her son, took the throne.
