Gay vacations to Ireland have been a popular choice dating back to at least the time of Oscar Wilde. While Ireland may not have been nearly as LGBT-friendly in his time, it has come a long way since the days of folks – like Wilde – being sent to hard labor camps or jail for what was then known as “indecency.” In fact, up until 1861 the act of sodomy was punishable by death, but today Ireland has recently moved ahead of the U.S. when it comes to LGBT rights by legalizing civil unions for same-sex couples in 2009, after decriminalizing homosexuality in 1993.
While these significant legal strides might not mean that every village – or even every larger city – is ready to fully embrace same-sex relationships, Ireland has become a rather welcoming country for the most part and is a wonderful choice for gay travel. If you have yet to travel to the Tropical North Queensland region of beautiful Australia , then you are really missing out on many of the natural wonders of the world. Many areas of the Tropical North are World Heritage listed as areas that are to be naturally preserved. This could be because Australia is home to the last area of natural rainforest in the world and is home to many unique creatures and plants that give life to this spectacular region.
When you visit the Daintree Rainforest and talk a walk along its trail you will see why this is such a natural wonder. The rainforest has been so wonderfully naturally preserved that you will witness the most amazing flora and fauna found anywhere. You will also be able to observe a variety of creatures that call this rainforest home. It is a fabulous wilderness area that is proud of the history it holds.
In addition to the rainforest there are many other wonderful areas to visit. One of the more popular areas, especially among tourists, is the Great Barrier Reef. The Reef has some of the most beautiful colors of nature all created by the coral that lines it. There is a blue stream of water that runs into the orange coral and many other breathtaking sights. Imagine having an intimate conversation with someone you love. Now imagine how that conversation would occur without speaking, or even writing. Imagine finding someone you’d very much like to know better. Suppose they’re interested in you as well. Imagine getting that relationship off the ground without using words of any kind.
That was the situation in 1800’s Victorian England. They had a very strict etiquette. Extreme discretion was demanded at all times. Romantic conversations, even in a whisper or in writing, were off-limits. Emotional expression however, will not be denied. People soon found ways around the rules as they attached hidden meanings to many otherwise normal gestures and objects. Flowers in particular were given special meanings.
The result was “secret” messages hidden in bouquets of flowers. Different meanings were attached to every type and color of flower, how they were presented, and how they were received. Many of the messages were romantic in nature. Some messages were rejections, and even insults. An exchange of flowers became a complete conversation.
Together with the language of flowers, small bouquets, known as tussie-mussies, became a secret way to declare intentions and make refusals, acceptances and rejections. Flowers allowed Victorians a way to express their emotions and thoughts without speech or writing. Read more...
